This is a hard blog to write
Since I set up the first iteration of my Wellington-based photography business in 2020, I have done a little bit of everything. But my primary work focused on maternity and newborns. And I enjoyed them. They challenged me, stretched me. Newborns in particular are hard work and require a special skill set to ensure a safe and smooth session. Newborn sessions also require extra equipment.
At the same time, newborn sessions marked a pivotal moment in people's lives, and it was a privilege to capture the emotions of that time.
However, over the past year, I have realised that I want to focus my photography on empowering women through stunning maternity, boudoir and branding photography. And fewer newborn sessions.
The main reason is that I no longer feel safe doing the full posed newborn sessions. As the frequency of my newborn sessions decreased last year, the longer they took and the less confident I was to keep these precious little bundles safe. And safety is always front of mind. I also felt like my skills were stagnating and I wasn't giving my clients the best service possible.
So, in 2026, I will not be offering posed newborn sessions in my Wainuiomata studio. There are some amazing photographers who specialise in this genre, and I am always happy to send you their way. I will be offering in-home lifestyle newborn sessions. These are a more relaxed option for those who want to capture the love and connection of the newborn stage. I will still be doing family portraits.
This is a big change, and is incredibly scary after being a jack of all trades (genres) for the past five years. But I know it is the right move for Novabella Studio, and for my clients.
Much love,
Debrin
