The corrupted SD card
Last weekend, I took my Wellington-based photographer self (and my family) up to the Hawkes Bay to visit family. My trusty camera came along with me. As we made it to the highest point of Saddle Rd, in the Manawatū, we were confronted by one of the most stunning views. Fog blanketed the eastern side of the mountain range below us. We stopped and I took some photos before we kept going. That night, I pulled out my camera once again to capture photos of my nephew decked out in a suit with his parents. It is ball season after all.
Then my own personal nightmare happened. I took the SD card out of my camera, plugged it into my card reader and none of the photos showed up. For the next two hours I battled with my computer, the SD card and some rather expensive technology. We still haven't managed to get the photos off the disk.
I am not going to lie, I am devastated. Sure, I am sad the fog photos are lost. But I am absolutely gutted the photos of my brother and his son are missing in the digital corrupted ether.
While there is not much I could do to prevent the card's corruption, it is a good reminder that technology fails. Just imagine if this had been someone's wedding photos! I will now be investing in back-up CF cards so that I have two in my camera for every photo.
There is also a lesson here for my clients. Print your photos (I can help you there). Save the digital files in multiple places. And don't assume you can come back to me at a later date to get your images. I can't promise that I will have your files after I deliver them to you – as we can see, technology fails.
This is a hard lesson to learn. And I will keep trying to recover the lost corrupted files.
