Playing with light
Another week, another chance for this portrait photographer to play with light and learn something new. The regional NZIPP (New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography) hosted award winning photographer Karolina Stus for its monthly meeting. She covered her favourite techniques using movement and the combination of strobes and constant lights in the studio.
This technique allows us to both track the movement and freeze it. One thing that Karolina emphasised (and I agree) is that this is all about playing. There are a lot of factors that feed into these sorts of photos and you are not going to get it right every time. You are feeding different variables into the image – the constant light, the movement of the subject, the strobe and the camera settings.
After showing us how to do the work, Karolina let us hook our camera's up and take a turn. I loved playing with this technique with Karolina there to help. And she was even willing to flick her hair for me!
Not everyone is going to love these images. Much like other forms of art, it will make you feel something and that will be different for each person. These images are also not perfect. I will be playing with the technique further to see how I can incorporate them in my client work and the work I do for different awards.
It really is such a privilege to be able to do these creative workshops. It feeds my soul and makes me a better photographer. I can't wait to do more.
